The short answer

Search by language, then call.

Mallu lists 221 GPs and medical clinics with a public link to the Malayali community, and 181 of them say Malayalam is spoken. Phone first to check who speaks it and which days they work.

Three ways to search

  • Use Mallu. Open the GPs and medical clinics page for your city and look for the 'Malayalam spoken' badge. Each listing shows where we found that.
  • Use a doctor booking site. Many of them show the languages a doctor speaks on the doctor's profile, and some let you filter by language.
  • Ask your local Malayali association or friends. Word of mouth still finds the doctors who are not easy to find online.

Check before you book

Doctors move between clinics and work different days, so a language listed online can be out of date. A two-minute phone call saves a wasted trip.

  • Ask: 'Does a doctor there speak Malayalam, and which days are they in?'
  • Ask whether the doctor is taking new patients and whether they bulk bill.
  • You can check that any doctor is registered on the AHPRA public register. Mallu does not check registration.

If nobody near you speaks Malayalam

You can ask the clinic to arrange an interpreter. The Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS National) provides interpreting for many GP visits, and clinics can book it for you. TIS National's number is 131 450. Ask the clinic when you book, so it is ready when you arrive.

What Mallu can and cannot tell you

Mallu shows the public sources we found that a doctor or clinic speaks Malayalam or has Malayali ownership, and how sure we are. We do not rate the quality of care and we are not a regulator register. If a listing is wrong, use the 'claim or correct' link on the listing and we will fix it.
